Details

On 2 December 1955, the day after the arrest of Rosa Parks, Jo Ann Robinson and the members of the Women's Political Council (WPC) wrote and distributed a leaflet calling for a one-day boycott of buses on Monday, 5 December. That evening, African-American religious and civic leaders met at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and planned the boycott. A committee that included Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ralph Abernathy edited the leaflet and added a call for a mass meeting Monday evening. It was reproduced on the Dexter mimeograph machine and distributed by volunteers over the weekend.
