Following Gardner C. Taylor’s failed bid for the presidency of the National Baptist Convention (NBC), Barbour, King’s mentor while in seminary, urges King to “stand up and fight” his removal as vice president of the National Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress (BTU) by the organization’s president J. H. Jackson.1 Despite Barbour’s advice, King did not challenge his dismissal from the BTU.2

1. King was elected vice president of the BTU at the June 1958 convention (see Introduction and King to O. Clay Maxwell, 18 July 1958, in Papers 4:18 and 455–456, respectively).
2. King was replaced by the Reverend Ernest C. Estell of Dallas.
3. The BTU is a nominally independent subsidiary body of the NBC.
