On January 28, the King Institute hosted Freedom Summer veteran Maria Gitin, who discussed her new book This Bright Light of Ours: Stories from the Voting Rights Fight. The book offers an insider's experience of the community-based activism that was the heart of the civil rights movement. Describing the book as a celebration of grassroots heroes, Maria read first-person accounts of the people she met in the fight for voting rights. Combining memoir and oral history, Maria Gitin fills a vital gap in civil rights history by focusing on the neglected Freedom Summer of 1965. Thank you, Maria, for joining us.
