Institute Director Clayborne Carson had a very busy MLK holiday, giving interviews with outlets including local public radio, MSNBC, USA Today and the Mercury News on topics ranging from King's legacy to the Ferguson protests to reactions to the Selma film and Oscars-snub.  On January 11, Dr. Carson was the guest speaker at the Motherlode Martin Luther King Jr. Committee's 20th anniversary celebration in Sonora, California.

Dr. Carson gave two MLK Day addresses this year. The first event was at the San Jose African American Community Service Agency's 35th annual MLK luncheon. He then delivered the keynote address at the City of Hayward's King celebration. Finally, on January 21, Dr. Carson spoke at the Santa Clara Law Center for Social Justice & Public Interest's MLK celebration under the topic "MLK and Public Resistance to Racial Injustice: Echoes from Selma to Ferguson."
